CANON: Voltron: Legendary Defender

CANON HISTORY: here, season 2 spoilers
CANON PERSONALITY:
Shiro is a natural born leader. His compassion and empathy allow him to relate strongly with others and see the world through a different lens. Having been a prisoner of the Galra himself, he understands how the rest of the universe feels underneath the boot of the empire, and therefore is able to relate to them in a deeper way than the other paladins. While quite young, he is wise beyond his years, and possesses the unique ability to tell what is it that people need to hear to keep them going.

Shiro is incredibly earnest. Everything he does is genuine and heartfelt. He doesn’t say anything he doesn’t mean. He’s calm and level-headed, even in the most hopeless of situations, and fights hard to give everyone hope. Despite everything he’s been through, he’s an eternal optimist, always believing that good will inevitably triumph over evil, and that justice will always win out.

That being said, he is also an excellent actor. In captivity, he is able to convince his fellow prisoners that he is a bloodthirsty warrior, when in actuality he is doing what is necessary to defend his friends. We also see in season 1 that he has a great deal of suppressed memories from his PTSD, and suffers through the expected side-effects of a year long captivity. This is seen most clearly when the castle is corrupted and Shiro hallucinates Sendak speaking to him, playing on his deepest fears. Shiro responds in a panic and jettisons the captured Galra into space. When it comes down to it, Shiro is still very scared of what he’s been through, but he pushes it back and focuses on taking care of the boys and keeping the team together. He’s very aware of the fact that he’s the only thing keeping the team together. If he buckled under the pressure, he would take Voltron with him, and potentially the universe’s last hope.

While Shiro is usually the strong and capable leader, he isn’t incapable of relaxing and having fun. He plays just as hard as he works, provided that there isn’t an immediate danger. The “laser sounds” scene, for instance, involves a debate between the team of what a laser really sounds like. When it starts to get heated, Shiro steps in to calm it down, and put in his own suggestion of laser noises, with finger guns to go with it. Shiro is also a happy participant of the food fight, working and laughing with his teammates. It’s a shame that we don’t get to see more of this relaxed, lighthearted Shiro.

Instead, we normally see a man who has the laser-focus and dynamic precision of a general, but who loves and respects his team much like a fond older sibling. Shiro clearly thinks very highly of his team, respecting them for their individual strengths and knowing their weaknesses well enough to fill those gaps with the strengths of other Paladins. He can coordinate Voltron like the true battleship that it is, inspiring loyalty and admiration in his team.

All in all, Shiro is a very talented young man who is both willing and able to bear the burden of team leader. He is smart, empathetic, fun loving, and focused, the perfect blend for a good captain.
SKILLS/ABILITIES:
The most prevalent of his skills is in his cybernetic right arm. A “gift” from the Galra, it serves as a weapon, used most often for slicing through enemies or doors like an energy blade. It is also able to interface with Galra technology, serving purposes as mundane as opening a door, or as complex as hacking into a system. It has superhuman strength and durability. It is likely that the Galra have also made some “adjustments” to Shiro’s body in other ways in order to keep the cybernetic arm functioning and from damaging himself during combat.

Shiro is also extremely tactical, able to appraise situations with a practiced eye and analyze weaknesses and strengths quickly. This comes into play in combat situations, and is very helpful to Voltron when fighting new and increasingly complex enemies. He is a fast learner, picking up quickly on small details and putting together pieces that most wouldn’t. For example, once Pidge reveals they are related to the Holts, Shiro is able to determine that Pidge is Katie Holt, a secret that he keeps out of respect for her privacy.

Shiro is incredibly strong as well, not just physically, but mentally. While he is clearly an athletic and strong person physically, the amount of mental strain he can withstand is incredible. He went through a year of near constant torture without breaking. He adapts quickly to new situations and adjusts accordingly. He’s an unmistakeable leader.

His last noteworthy ability is tied to that of his Lion. Shiro is paladin to the Black Lion, Head of Voltron. Shiro has the strongest bond of any other paladin (besides perhaps Keith), able to fight off even Zarkon with the sheer power of his bond. He is the first to be able to see through his Lion’s eyes, and the only one so far to actually witness her memories.
CHARACTER: AU SECTION
AU NAME: Takashi “Shiro” Shirogane
AU AGE: 25
PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES:
His body differs only in that Shiro is missing his right arm from halfway between his elbow and shoulder rather than having a cybernetic prosthetic. The stress induced pigmentation loss in his hair is still there.
AU HISTORY:
Takashi Shirogane, or Shiro, as he’s fondly known, is the first-born of a large and multi-racial family based in Japan. After his father retired from the military, his parents chose to become foster parents for troubled youth. Shiro has one blood sibling, a younger brother named Keith*, and has had many foster siblings from all walks of life. Inspired by his father’s example, Shiro enlisted in the military as soon as he was old enough. He quickly learned he had a knack for strategy, and the leadership skills he had developed within his family helped him soar up through the ranks. Shiro was part of a group that was sent overseas to help mediate a dispute. It was meant to be a fairly safe assignment for the young captain, a test of his diplomatic and leadership abilities, but everything went bad. Shiro’s squad was taken out by a car bomb which severely damaged his right arm. He was the only one still moving when radicals swept the area to survey their handiwork. Instead of killing him, they chose instead to take him prisoner. After several months of torture and unsuccessful negotiations to return the Japanese soldier to his people, a strike team was sent in to retrieve him and wipe out the extremists. By the time Shiro was rescued, his arm was so badly infected that it had to be amputated.

The following months were hard on Shiro. His family tried to help, but despite their best efforts, he sank into a deep depression, sometimes not leaving his room for days. It wasn’t until Keith pointed out that a younger foster sibling was beginning to emulate Shiro that he really snapped out of it. While it took time, and he is still working through it, he forced himself to get out. Through the help of his family and his military recommended therapist, he started to realize that just because he was now an amputee did not mean his life was over. Not only that, but he had to be a good example for the younger children that his parents took in, and letting depression get the best of him was the opposite of what he wanted to teach.

Upon a suggestion from his therapist, Shiro realized that what would help him best would be a change in scenery. When a buddy from the military mentioned Recolle, Shiro was delighted to find a small, affordable shop for rent. He had always harbored a quiet dream of opening up a bakery, after all, and everything fell into place just right. Shiro took off to the city, excited to start a new chapter of his life and prove to himself that his disability could not cripple his ability to chase his dreams.

*: I have permission from Keith’s mun for them to be siblings.

AU PERSONALITY:
While Shiro’s core characteristics are obviously still there, his personality is far more laid back in this AU than in canon. In canon, he is boxed into being the strong, commanding leader, the support for four frightened teens that are homesick and being asked to do far more than is fair. In that situation, Shiro has to be constantly in control and prepared for any situation. He has to put others before himself.

Whereas, in this AU, Shiro has the freedom to think about himself. Growing up as the eldest brother to a myriad of siblings, some of which had tough beginnings, Shiro learned how to take command of a situation. He has a deep love for other people, and an empathy learned through watching children of all walks of life. He is used to having to prove himself, and has a fierce, genuine loyalty to friends and family.

In the military, he developed his tactical skills and leadership abilities, and was slated for a long and successful military career. He learned focus and precision, as well as the importance of habits and routine. Shiro has a particular way of getting things done in the fastest and most efficient way possible.

After things went sour, Shiro had to learn how to fight even when things looked dark. He learned how to tolerate pain and how to deepen that loyalty he already had. He learned patience, how to stay relaxed when things went bad. Later, once he came home, he was able to actually feel the effects of his ordeal. He was able to deal with it in a healthy and productive way, once he got help. In canon, Shiro doesn’t get that chance. He has no time to breathe and to heal, where in this AU, he has the freedom to have that long, slow recovery that he really needed. While he is still in the recovery process, he bears less of a burden than canon Shiro. He is more light-hearted, more calm and less desperate. While he does suffer PTSD, he is not constantly haunted by past decisions.

All in all, this Shiro is in a more healthy state of mind. He’s calmer, more cheerful, and more relaxed.
