[It had been another one of those nights, where she wakes up in the middle of the ship's night cycle to Shiro lying next to her, sweating, having thrashed enough where the blanket of her bed was twisted around his metal arm, smelling burnt. She won't be surprised if he had burned a hole through the fabric, something that should worry her of her own safety, considering she sleeps next to him almost regularly nowadays, but it's more of a concern for him.
Carefully, Allura turns to him, sitting up, knowing that waking him from his nightmare could have the potential for making things even uglier, but also knowing that no good will come out of this night terror either. There's the urge to comfort him, to protect him from whatever wracks his mind, so even as these feelings clench vice-like in her gut wanting to reach out and take him from whatever it is that's troubling him, her voice, though steady and strong, is still said in a low tone, gentle, trying to soothe him out of his sleep without having to lay a hand on him.]
[This is exactly why he doesn't like to sleep, but Allura is insistent and he can't argue with her. Some nights are most certainly better than others, and tonight's one of the bad ones, culminating in the paladin tossing and turning in his sleep, moaning and panting in a night terror.
Allura's voice registers vaguely in his subconscious, but not enough to wake him.]
[There's a worried crease between her brows, and that clenching, gripping feeling in her stomach only seems to tighten, straining against her chest at the way he continues to toss ans turn, the fact that he can hear her, but that he still remains asleep.]
Shiro! [She says his name louder this time, and despite this being a nightly thing, she still isn't quite sure how to go about this without potentially endangering herself or worse, endangering him. But regardless, she finally reaches over, pressing a cool hand against his cheek, cupping his face towards her, and running her thumb across his cheekbone. She holds back her desire to lean over him, instead, repeating herself, thumb still stroking his cheek in a repetitive motion as though to ease him out of this nightmare.] Shiro, you have to wake up.
[It's hard to say what's different about this time, but Shiro jerks awake, sitting bolt upright. His arm glows purple, thankfully twisted in blankets where it can't hurt anyone, and after a moment, he realizes where he is.]
Allura.
[Dammit. Shiro sighs, untangling his arm and rubbing his face with his flesh-and-blood one.]
[She jerks her hand back as suddenly as he sits up, feeling her heart pound slightly in her chest despite herself at the glow of his cybernetic arm pulsating briefly beneath the cover of the blanket. But she calms the moment he comes to, not wanting him to worry.]
I'm here.. [She wonders if saying that helps, and she sits up on her knees, resting her hand at his shoulder, eyes searching his face as she continues speaking to him in a low voice.] You were having another nightmare.
[Shiro sighs softly and leans into her touch, rubbing at his face before relaxing. These nightmares are really becoming a problem, and he isn't sure anymore that merely sitting through them is helping.]
I'm sorry. It isn't fair to make you put up with this... I'll find another place to sleep.
[As he relaxes, she leans forward, free hand brushing back the white hair that's sticking to the sweat on his brow, kissing him on the forehead.]
Sleeping somewhere else won't make the nightmares go away, Shiro. [Knowing him, he probably wouldn't sleep.] You're just...it's not an easy think to overcome. Not on your own.
[He needs this sleep; he's exhausted. But he just can't, not with these constant nightmares. It just makes him more tired than he was to begin with. The touch on his forehead makes him sigh quietly, eyes closing.]
Then what do we do? I'm no good to the team like this... No good to you, either.
[Her hand is back to resting at his cheek, and she presses her forehead ahead his, closing her eyes and humming thoughtfully. She admires him, admires the strength he manages for the sake of the team, the weight of responsibility he seems to uphold.
But sometimes, like now, when his thoughts go to the team and to her first, instead of himself...
So she doesn't answer him, not immediately, and she drags her hand down from his face to curl her fingers under his chin, tipping his head up so she can kiss him, pulling back to look at him, still tilting his chin up.]
You...should stop worrying about what's good for me. I wouldn't being sharing my bed with you if you weren't good to me.
[Allura has the unique ability to quiet Shiro's thoughts. Whether through affection or just her comforting, solid presence, she helps him to see more clearly, to calm the chaos that his mind can become. She's the only one that soothes the nightmares and vivid flashbacks.
Shiro should be in control, as the leader. He shouldn't need someone the way he needs Allura, but he does. His protests quiet with her kiss, and he lets himself focus on her, just her. It's...cathartic.]
I know you have Coran to protect you, but it's my job to make sure everyone is alright. And as your...whatever we are...I'm especially interested in your wellbeing. [He leans in to press a soft kiss to her cheek.] You deserve the very best. More than I can offer.
[If nothing else, Lance is a man of his word. It's late one night, after they've all retired to bed, that he leaves his room in pajamas and makes a pit stop in the kitchen. Two mugs of tea in his hands (he isn't sure what the herb is, but it's relaxing, akin to chamomile), he heads to his destination--Shiro's room.
With his hands full, he kind of has to awkwardly hit the button on the door panel with his shoulder, but it works. Lance peeks in. Of course Shiro is still awake.]
[Of course he's awake, though he doesn't look it. His eyes are glazed over from where he's staring at some book, and he blinks as Lance enters, attempting to look like he's a little bit more put together.]
[Earth is...a strange planet. Peaceful in the sense that, until recently at least, it had been relatively untouched by an intergalactic presence, but full of strife in the way all planets have their inter-communal issues. But they're issues to be handled by the leaders of this world, and although Allura remains a Princess, both in status and in title, she's...not on Earth explicitly for intergalactic relations following the defeat of the Galra empire.
She is, to an extent, but she's also here in terms of...well, because Shiro's here. Because following the war, he's not only a hero and paladin of the Black Lion, but because he's her husband, as new of a term that is to her, and...it's nice, having a home she can return to. Not in location, but in him. It's a change, and one she's finding a nice change to slip in to, waking up to a galaxy finally free of an empire, as well as waking up next to a warm body, next to someone she loves.
But for the past few weeks, waking up next to him had not been its usual pleasantness. She admittedly ate something strange earlier this month, something that had her sick in bed for a day or two, but she didn't quite seem to recover from it. She aches strangely, her temperature is still warmer than usual, and she's...queasy.
And the colouring of her markings have started to shift. Slowly, but noticeable to her, they've been going from their usual pinkish hue to something more ambiguous in colour, getting darker, turning a touch more purple in shade. It's...a sign. She's not ignorant enough to assume it is actual illness at this point, and thinking about it causes a nervous flip in her gut, wondering just how it's possible, if it's possible, or if it's simply wishful thinking. Simple marital bliss causing her to convince herself of this.
She's messaged Coran about it, being unable to fall asleep after waking up early in the morning due to a touch of vertigo. She's sitting at the kitchen table, a mug of Earthling tea piping hot set beside her, and she's looking at a tablet Pidge had given her as a gift, not entirely paying attention to the novel she's reading, drumming her fingers slightly on the table.]
[It's...strange, getting used to a normal life again. Earth is different now, and yet...the same, at the same time. Humans are so predictable. Their world gets a little shaken up, and then they're back to their usual routine.
But Shiro has never been quite like the others, too military to really fit in. He's used to a strict sort of schedule, and making one of his own is...difficult. But with Allura's help, the two develop something normal. Something that is entirely theirs.
Allura is beautiful, and she's his. He still can't really wrap his mind around that. The fact that Allura is no longer just a teammate and an occasional lover, in private, quiet moments stolen in between battle. She's his wife.
He wakes earlier than usual and makes a soft sound, shifting towards where Allura should be. She's not there, and her spot is cold. She's been gone for a while.
Shiro frowns, rolling out of bed and rubbing the sleep out of his eyes. Yawning, he gets up, heading off to find her.]
...Allura?
[There she is, at the table with tea. Gods above, she's beautiful. He smiles softly, giving her forehead a soft kiss before sitting down beside her.]
[She looks up from her tablet at the sound of her name, fingers stilling at the table. For a moment, she looks surprised to see him, but her expression softens with an easy fondness, leaning into the kiss before settling easier in her chair as he sits next to her.]
Vertigo this time.
[There's a bit of hesitation in her voice, and she pretends to focus on the tablet once more, taking a long sip of tea, keeping the rim of the mug pressed to her lips when she stops. The scent of peppermint is soothing, she finds, the warmth of her drink an added comfort to a body that's relentless in disagreeing with her.]
I didn't want to wake you, but I did start the coffee maker for you. Successfully this time, might I add. [She's...still adapting to Earthling technology.] It should be ready by now.
[He frowns, clearly concerned. Maybe the atmosphere is giving her body trouble? He wonders if maybe a vacation is in order, back to something more similar to Altea.
There's a comfortable silence for a few moments before Allura speaks again, and Shiro can't help but smile at that, getting up once more to pour himself a cup.]
I knew you'd figure it out eventually. [There's a gentle tease in his voice, and once he's retrieved his coffee, he's sitting back down.
There's another quiet pause before he reaches out, setting his metal hand gently over hers.] Are you alright?
[Allura knows he's concerned for her, and it bothers her. Not because he's worried about her, but because she's giving him cause to be concerned.
She sets her mug down, smiling back and letting out a small laugh, but when he gets up to pour himself a cup, she reaches for her messaging device, seeing that Coran had finally responded. She's been mulling about this enough to where his response doesn't particularly surprise her, but it still causes her complexion to go a bit pallid. She sets the phone away as soon as Shiro sits back down, and his gentle hand is a small comfort. She turns her hand over, so she can lace her fingers between his.]
I believe so. I mean, I am fine. Most certainly fine. [But it's incredibly obvious that something is bothering her, and she's well aware that it shows. Her mind is racing, wondering if she should wait until after she sees Coran, until after the definitive signs are there, or simply...until it's the right moment...
But both of them have been through a lot where she knows there's never quite the right moment, that now is better than later, and she inhales, grounding herself and tensing her hand around his. And despite her nerves, and the muddled, sick feeling that sits heavy in her gut, she feels...strangely happy. Especially when she turns to look at him.]
[If she had said that aloud, he would have argued that as her husband, it's his job to worry about her and make sure she's alright. He's supposed to be taking care of her, after all.
Shiro knows her well enough to see the emotions in her eyes, which only concerns him further. There's more to this than he had guessed, he's sure, and he squeezes her hand gently, letting her get her thoughts together. She'll tell him in her own time.
He's expecting something terrible. He's expecting her to say she's leaving him, or that she's dying, or something equally bad. What Shiro doesn't expect is good news.]
You're--?
[Give him a moment to process. His eyes are wide, mouth hanging open, as he works through what he just heard her say.
And slowly, a smile lights up his face, starting at his mouth and moving up to his eyes until he's laughing.]
[She's admittedly scared as to how he'd react. They've technically been together for a while, after all, but marriage was still a new thing for the two of them. She's not sure how a baby would factor in...or...if it were even possible.
So during that moment of stunned silence, she feels her heart rate pick up, that same nervous flip in her stomach when she first suspected that maybe she wasn't sick, but the smile that slowly lights up on his face, and his laughter...it's infectious, and it feels like a certain weight has been lifted.
She lets out a relieved laugh, and her expression turns from nervous and hesitant to something happier, and it's hard to keep from smiling herself, though she knows she still needs to remain hesitant. Responsible, at least.]
I didn't think it was possible, but...the signs point to it. So it's very likely. [She moves to take his hand between both of hers, shifting her seat to better face him.] Only time will tell, but I'm probably going to see Coran tomorrow. He...knows more of this than I do.
[He had been there for her mother and father, after all.]
[While they've been together for a while, yes, putting a word on it was something they'd both been very hesitant to do until the war had ended. And even then, there had been some awkwardness before Shiro had finally just proposed. It's been about a year now since they married, not very long at all, but he'd always hoped that something like this could happen, that they could have their own family.
He may not have shared those thoughts with Allura, fearing that she wouldn't feel the same. And after all, they weren't even sure if it was possible, and it was Allura's body that would be changing to support a pregnancy. Shiro didn't want to make any assumptions about what she would want.
but now that it's happening, Shiro is thrilled. He kisses her enthusiastically, strokes her cheek softly, laughs out loud.]
I can't believe this!
[He pauses abruptly, curbing his enthusiasm and biting his lip.] But...is this what you want, Allura?
[Allura always assumed they'd have The Talk more in depth somewhere down the line, about the future of their union, the idea of being a family and raising a family. And she knows cross-species relationships didn't often bear children due to biological differences, but it was something she had observed...well, millennia ago. At least among her people.
But after losing so much, to the war, in the interim of that 10,000 year time jump and the events that followed, Allura knew she wanted...something. Her marriage with Shiro was the start, and even if it simply remained the two of them she'd have been happy with this new life.
She still feels a bit sick, and it's exacerbated by her nerves and excitement at having said it out loud, but the gentle touch of his hand at her cheek, his kiss and his excited laughter...it's just as soothing as the tea is.
So when Shiro pauses, and when he bites his lip in that cute, irresistible way, it's her turn to touch his face, to kiss him back, and she looks at him fondly when she pulls back.]
Of course it is. I know I never really seemed like the motherly sort but...I've always wanted this. [She strokes his hair back, an unconstrained grin spreading across her face.] Especially with you. [She takes his hands in hers once more, sitting back in her chair, still smiling.] Assuming you're able to handle the next twelve months. Apparently my mother had been a terror; I can't promise I'll be any different.
[That's right, not nine. But twelve. Which...makes sense considering the longevity of Alteans.]
